Day one as a "Wing man"

The first day was chaotic but fun. I didn't get to see a whole lot of the city or the ride itself as I was posted at a firestation 5 hours prior to the cyclists getting there. It was fun though and a little comforting to know that no matter what state you are in...all firemen are the same. I mean this in a good way! The guys at Perth Amboy were hospitable and fun to hang with. I met some really neat people and got to hear some stories from some of the other wingmen and riders and why they are here this year and who they are riding for. I hope tomorrow is not as crazy as today and more organized...but as usual I'll just roll with it. LOL! I'm excited to be a part of this ride and am so grateful to all the riders, especially Susan and Mark for riding for Steph and the other two crew members of PHI crew 12.

As a side note (those of you who have been in the passenger seat while I'm driving the ambulance can identifiy most with this) I made it through my first day without curb checking Mark's big ass truck or trailer!!! I also didn't hit any fire hydrants or any other fire aparatus. I have, however, fallen out of the truck a few times. Mark one word...sidesteps!!!

That's all for now...I'm exhausted!

Day to of Travel to NYC

Loaded bikes, bags, electronics and people into truck. Drove to find coffee (Forest City, AK not a coffee kinda place). Found a Star Bucks in the next town. Life better. Traveled on and on on on and on. Dined on fast food, hydrated on caffeine, no chance to stretch/exercise.....life on the road.

Took Spoc to see Lady Liberty at a truck stop in TN. Passed up the chance to go to the Nascar Outlet (My white trash in me is regretting this - though I have never watch a Nascar race).

We left AK, traveled over the Mississippi River, thru the hills, no scratch that the mountains of TN and into VA. Our arrival into Roanoke it was dark and raining. The outline of the Shenandoah Mountains would pop when a streak of lighting would light up the night sky. OMG I forget the size of the mountains - not so bad from the cab of a pick up truck but from the view point of sitting on a bicycle seat brings some fear to my stomach.

We spend the night in Woodstock, VA.....checkin to the Holiday Inn Express at 2am. We will need to be on the road by 9am if we are to make it to NYC- I doubt we even wake by 9am. Good night.

The Team Leaves For NY-

The team packed up, one 15 foot trailer, one motorcycle, three bikes, four spare bicycle rims, two spare bike tires, two dozen spare tubes, 12 suitcases, 100 goos/gells, 12 pack of beer (thanks MJ), four lap tops, four cell phones, four ipods, 4 digital cameras, two pillows, one binkey, two horseshoe shaped travel pillows, tools, tools and more tools, three ice chest, one 10 gal water cooler, and the four of us.

First stop the auto parts store because the lights to the trailer would not work. Second stop the dealership because the lights to the trailer were still not working. At the Ford dealership I bought Mark a twenty-five cent fuse for $3.32. However when the service guy at the dealership found out what the parts guy was charging for the fuse he had me wait and he came back with a handful of extra fueses - After these two little detours we are on the road and out of the Austin city limits by 1:30 in the afternoon. Not bad for a planned departure of 11am! lol

We stopped for dinner in Sulfersprings, TX - BK! Nothing like a well balance meal of grease, FF, cheeseburgers and cokes. But with the order of a kids meal I was able to get small plastic miniature Spock from the new movie Star Track. Little did I know, when all got back into the to continue the long nights drive, that you can push a button on the back of Spock's head, the button activated his voice saying "the rescue attempt would be illogical" how appropriate. You will be seeing Spock in the pictures....I think I am going to attach him to my handle bars.

Made it out of the Lone Star State just as the sun was setting. Welcome to AK....the roads went from smooth to bummpy tooooooo bummmmpty to freakin I think I lost a kidney bummmmppppy. Stopped in Forest City, AK. Cheap Best Western. The four of us packed in a tiny room with two beds that were the size of a European twin. Made it to bed at by 1am and slept in till 7am.
